ELLA 4 - Comparative Analysis through Independent Study

Assessment Objectives

AO1: Select and apply relevant concepts and

approaches from integrated linguistic and

literary study, using appropriate terminology

and accurate, coherent written expression

AO3: Use integrated approaches to explore

relationships between texts, analysing and

evaluating the significance of contextual

factors in their production and reception

Requirements

2000-2500 words

Two drafts submitted

Detailed analysis of two poems and one short story. At least. Passing reference to more would be helpful, expecially if bringing in further points of comparison.

Throughout the essay, you must be making comparisons. You should compare the themes which are presented (as your title will probably tell you to do) but you should also compare:

  • word choices
  • grammatical features
  • figurative language
  • narrative voice
  • contexts
  • and just about anything else you can think of!

How?

Title: Compare the ways in which Dickinson and X explore Y

Introductions: The best introductions will make a bold statement about the way that both pieces being studied work, relating specifically to the question.

Style:

  • Write in a formal, analytical style.
  • Use the present tense (despite the fact the writers are mostly dead!)
  • Try to avoid referring to yourself: make assertive statements rather than saying "I think"
  • Use quotations throughout, trying to keep them short (so you can focus on details of language), and to embed them in the flow of your sentence
  • Include explicit links between the poems and story throughout the essay
