William Molyneux asked John Locke: If someone is born blind can be taught to distinguish a cube and sphere by touch, can they distinguish the two if their vision is restored? Locke's answer was this: No, they cannot, because they were never taught to see the difference. William put this to a test. The results showed that the subjects could not tell them apart visually, just like Locke said. This experiment shows that, to visually tell things apart, we need to learn how to know what they are by sight.

Objective 17-1
Sensory Deprivation and Restored Vision
Do you think that, if, an adult born blind has their vision restored, could they recognize shape, forms, and complete faces?
The answer is no. If the person was born blind and their vision was restored as an adult, they cannot recognize these things, since they were never able learn the difference.
