Lewis & Clark 1803-1806

Discoveries along the trail.

Meriwether Lewis:

Scientist/Naturalist

Lewis was not only the Co-Captain of the expedition, but was also given the task of documenting new flora and fauna he encountered along the trail.

The Corps of Discovery was given the task of exploring the Louisiana Territory. Lewis and Clark observed, recorded and documented information in the following scientific areas:

  • Botany (182 plant discoveries)
  • Zoology (120 animal discoveries)
  • Cartography/Geography (mapping)
  • Ethnography (study of people)
  • Geology (rock & soil samples)
  • Meteorology (weather)
  • River conditions (depth, clarity, current)

The Corps of Discovery documented over 182 new plant species during their expedition. Jefferson told Lewis that the priority was agricultural plants, then horticultural plants, and lastly plants that were pleasing to the eye.

Some of the seeds that Lewis & Clark brought back were planted in Philadelphia and are still growing today!

Animal Specimens

In their years on the trail, Lewis & Clark documented 120 new species of animals. Lewis and Clark sent back a large number of zoological specimens, including a few live ones, as well as skins, bones, skeletons, teeth, talons and horns. Among the five live animals Lewis sent Jefferson in 1805 was a "barking squirrel," or black-tailed prairie dog, which lived out the rest of its life at the White House.

Lewis sent Jefferson 4 Magpies, one Prairie Dog

and one Prairie Chicken. Only one magpie and the Prairie Dog survived.

Congrats! You are now a member of the Corps of Discovery. Lewis has noticed your keen sense of observation. He has asked you to leave the keel boat and explore with him. Lewis expects you to make five journal entries: combination of plant and animal specimens.

Make sure to include:

  • name of plant/animal
  • drawing of plant/animal
  • description of plant/animal
  • range (where it is found)
  • size/weight
  • interesting facts
