What Engineering Lessons Were Learned From The Failure To Prevent It From Happening In The Future?
The engineering company doubled the hanging rods that held the walkways. when they began to rebuild to add to the extra ceiling support. The weak ceiling support is what caused the faulty walkway. What Was The Purpose Of The Hyatt Regency Walkway?
The Hyatt Regency Walkway was built to be a faster route to other parts of the hotel. It was a very large building and so the Hotel thought it was a good idea to build faster means of transportation. Before the date of the structural failure the support and strength of the walkway was debated and the ceiling support rods were changed many times due to lack of communication between the fabricator and the engineering design team, but were finally put to rest in time for the party being held in the hotel. They were also built to connect the bedrooms of the hotel to the conference rooms to leave more interior space for other more important parts of the hotel.
What Caused The Hyatt Regency Walkway to Fail And When Did It Fail?
On July 17 1981, the Hyatt Regency Hotel held a tea party for anyone with an interest in attending. With so many people walking on, and dancing on the walkways, the support beams hanging from the ceiling started to give out. Both the second floor, and fourth floor walkways fell. The fourth floor walkway, gave out first falling on top of the second floor walkway, sending them both to the ground, landing on all the people occupying the lobby floor. The third floor walkway was used less during this time so managed to remain structurally sound. About a year before the walkway collapsed 2700 square feet of the atrium ceiling collapsed because of the poor roof connections of the north end of the room.
