NAZI Germany begins Re-Armament! 1933

Japan invades Manchuria in 1931!

*Nazi Germany violation of Treaty of Versailles*

Mukden incident sparks full-scale invasion!

Hitler Announces Military Expansion!

LoN condemns Hitler, no actions taken.

In March 1935 Hitler openly announced German expansion of its Army to 600,000. He also announced the development of a German Air Force and expansion of the German Navy. This would lead to the creation of the Nazi Luftwaffe and the already feared German U-boats. The League of Nations did nothing to stop this.

In 1931 Japan was hurting due to the worldwide depression. An obvious solution was to invade the resource-rich region of Manchuria in NE China. After a staged explosion on a Japanese-owned railway in Mukden, Japan invaded.

Where's the League of Nations?

“It must be thoroughly understood that the lost land will never be won back by solemn appeals to the God, nor by hopes in any League of Nations, but only by the force of arms.” - Adolf Hitler

Spanish Civil War 1936!

Italy invades Ethiopia in 1935!

Hitler and Mussolini send aid to Franco

LoN condemns act, enacts sanctions.

Nazi Germany marches into the Rhineland in 1936!

Italian Prime Minister Mussolini sent 400,000 Italian troops to invade Abbysinia (Ethiopia). The Italians captured the capital Addis Ababa in 1936. The League of Nations did not want to be too harsh regarding economic sanctions on Italy, as they did not want to initiate an alliance between Mussolini and Hitler.

Violates Treaty of Versailles...again.

In 1936 Spain erupted in Civil War between Spanish Republicans (left-wing government) and Nationalists (fascists), led by Gen. Francisco Franco. The Nationalists received help from Hitler and Mussolini in the form of planes, tanks, artillery, and troops. The League of Nations did nothing to support the Spanish Gov't, nor did it stop foreign intervention.

Anschluss with Austria in 1938!

In March 1936 Hitler ordered 30,000 troops to march into the Rhineland, a demilitarized zone between Germany and France. This was a violation of the Treaty of Versailles and a test of France's resolve. There was no response from the League of Nations.

Hitler handed the Sudetenland! Peace through Appeasement?

In yet another violation of the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler announces the merging of Austria into a greater Germany, or Anschluss. Germany had just expanded without a shot fired.

In Sept 1938, Hitler met with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to discuss the annexation of areas in Czechoslovakia inhabited by ethnic Germans. In the end, France, the U.K., and Italy signed an agreement permitting the Nazis to annex the Sudetenland. This area was also rich in resources, banks, and industry; and would leave the rest of Czechoslovakia unable to defend itself against invasion. Germany would completely control Czechoslovakia after it was absorbed into the Third Reich in March 1939.
