1869
The Victorian Government built Lake Condah Mission.
1870
The Lake Condah Mission School opened.
1883
St, Mary’s Church of England as built and opened.
1913
Reverend Stahle the Mission manager retired and it became a Government Mission.
1919
The Board for the Protection of the Aborigines closed Lake Condah Mission.
1951
The Victorian State Government handed over nearly all of the Lake Condah Reserve to the Soldier Settlement Commission to give the soldiers from WII farming land.
1984
The Victorian Government returned 53 hectares of the original Lake Condah Reserve to the local Aboriginal community.
Education
Aboriginals have always taught their children through stories and their customs, but at the mission they were not allowed to do this. They were taught in a European and unfamiliar way.
The Lake Condah area was home to the Kerrupjmara people prior to the Europeans.
Work and Wages.
Many missions made money by farming and putting the residents to work. The residents didn’t see anything for their labour apart from maybe a small increase in their food.
