Gompers inspired later generations of labor leaders, such as George Meany.

Gompers' beliefs led to the development of procedures for collective bargaining and contracts between labor and management which are still in use today.

He was one of the creators of the modern institutions that he referred to in his last words—for capitalism he won the loyalty of labor, and for labor he won a part in business decision making.

What does labor want? We want more school houses and less jails. More books and less guns. More learning and less vice. More leisure and less greed. More justice and less revenge. We want more ... opportunities to cultivate our better natures.

"We want eight hours and nothing less. We have been accused of being selfish, and it has been said t we will want more; that last year we got an advance of ten cents and now we want more. We do want more."

"He lives to work instead of working to live"

[The labor movement is] a movement of the working people, for the working people, by the working people, governed by ourselves, with its policies determined by ourselves...

Due to the hectic hours of work men and women had no time for themselves, they got up early in the morning, go to work, return home tired and go to sleep repeating this everyday. Gompers goal when writing "What does the working man want ?" was to establish an eight-hour workday, so that the workers could enjoy some time for themselves.

Samuel Gompers was one of the USA's most early labor reformer.

Gompers established the American Federation of Labor in a period in which the public was hostile toward labors for they were suspicious of radicalism.

Gompers fought to demonstrate that workers wanted what everyone else had: a better life, good pay, good working conditions and time for themselves
