Common Good: The sum of those conditions of social life which allow social groups and their individual members relatively thorough and ready access to their own fulfillment.

Human dignity requires that we work for the common good, that we create and support institutions that improve our human life, individually and collectively.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the common good entails three essential elements.

The Three Essential Elements:

Respect for the Person

Society must allow each individual to fulfill his or her vocation, respecting individual conscience, privacy, and freedom of religion.

Social Well-Being and Development

Social policy should see to it that every person has what is necessary to live a full human life.

Peace

Without peace and stability, it would be impossible to establish a just society.

Respect For the Common Good

The common good can not be promoted without respecting individuals and groups of people.

Two virtues that will help in the conversion are the solidarity and preferential option for the poor.

Solidarity:

The Christian virtue of social charity, that helps us see that we are all members of one human family, sharing equal human dignity.

Preferential Option for the Poor:

The purpose of this is so the poor can grow to take an active role in society and share in the common good.
