When Do Kids Become Adults?

Our position on the age for becoming an adult

We believe 18 is a good age to become a legal adult for these reasons:

  • they finish high school and go off to college
  • they can legally have a job and can drive
  • they can legally vote
  • they can join the military if they chose

This article supports our claim by showing that when you become 18, you are officially an adult and do not have to inform your parents of anything. You have the choice to tell your parents about what happens in your life because you are no longer required to inform them about what happens.

"In the 26th Amendment, ratified in 1971, establishes 18 as the minimum voting age for both state and federal elections."(lines 37-38)

This amendment separates children from adults because like every boundary, children are restricted from certain rights. This shows that politicians believe that 18 year-old are mature to vote, which is a big responsibility.

" At 18, teenagers can get their license in a matter of weeks" (lines14-15)

This proves our claim because, adults trust 18 year-old more than 16 or 17 year-old, because they are more mature and can handle more pressure.

Call to Action

As we stated, 18 is a suitable age for kids to become adults. As the brain is mature, mandatory school is over and you can legally get a job, vote, and drive.

We highly encourage political figures and citizens to keep the age boundaries as they are.

"'Raising the driving age from 16 to 17 would benefit society as a whole," says Liza Darwin,17, of Nashville."(lines 84-85)

This proves our claim because even teenagers are saying that 18 year-old are more mature than 16 and 17 year-old.
