1850 a 45 year old slave was bought by Scofield and thought to have worked on the Legare project.

When the construction was complete Clariosophic Society moved in to the college furnishing the hall on the top floor.

In 1884 the one ond a half story frame locker behind the College was believed to be slave quarters

They were meant to hold sixty students.

The top hall of the center building was used for literary societies where the clariosophic society moved in

The number of students reached it's maximum during the antebellum days. So, William C. Preston ordered that the Legare College and the Harper College be built for $20,000. The cost was actually $20,543.82.
