In 1848 J.N. Scofield was hired to build Legare College as an addition to Pickney College.
1850 a 45 year old slave was bought by Scofield and thought to have worked on the Legare project.
When the construction was complete Clariosophic Society moved in to the college furnishing the hall on the top floor.
