An Endangered Species
An endangered species is a species with a low population, such as the Western Lowland Gorilla.
A CRITICALLY endangered species is a species with a REALLY low population, such as the Cross River gorilla.
Bad news
The bad thing, however, is that the Cross River gorilla is a CRITICALLY endangered species! There are only 200-300 left on the planet! Unlike the Western Lowland Gorilla, which has 10,000 left in the wild.
Why They're Endangered
These subspecies are critically endangered due to habitat loss and people hunting gorillas for their meat and skin. Part of their habitat has been invaded by ruthless people in the past few years.
The Cross River gorillas tend to live in groups led and protected by an alpha male. The alpha male gets to mate with a female in his group and produce generally one baby. Cross River gorilla babies live with their mamas until they are a few years old and become independent. The average Cross River gorilla lives up to 35-50 years. They also live in jungles and forests of central and western Africa, along with lowland swamps and secondary forests.
WWF (World Wildlife Fund) has teamed up with officials in Cameroon and Nigeria to build a protected area that surrounds the border between the two nations.
They made a protected field, ranger posts, and a system to keep watch on the population.
More facts
Cross River gorillas are one of the Great Apes, which have a number of features that can help them survive a little better in the jungle. The Cross River Gorilla's features are its big head, long arms, and opposable thumbs, which help them peel fruit. Cross River gorillas have very few predators because of their large size. They are one of the two subspecies of the Western gorilla-the other being the Western Lowland gorilla.
Their scientific name is 'gorilla gorilla diehli'.
They are omnivores, but their diet is mostly vegetarian, including plants, fruits, leaves, flowers, and some invertebrates.
Cross River gorillas are a unique subspecies of the Western gorilla. They live on the border of Nigeria and Cameroon.
