One of the main outcome was the creation of his agency theory in which Milgram believes that there are two states in which people operate- the autonomous and the agentic. He believed it was possible to train people to be in the agentic state.
In an autonomous state:
-individual see themselves as having power
-they see their actions as being voluntary
Another example : Jack is in the autonomous state because he sees himself having power, telling the boys what to do and where to go . Jack tells his new tribe that they will invite the others to feast upon their meat at their new camp on the beach. He also tells them that they will steal the fire they need to keep their camp alive and that they will offer the pig's head to the "beast" as a thank you for their successful hunt. He is leading his tribe very differently than Ralph-he has instantly become a dictator and the others, for now, are following his lead because he has provided them with a means for procuring meat.
The experiment that Milgram conducted involved asking a group of volunteers to give electric shocks to another volunteer. The shocks were given in increments of 15 volts starting at 15 volts and increasing to 450 volts in response to any incorrect answers given in a memory test.
Milgram measured how far a person would before that person would disobey to the orders he/she was given.
The equipment was fake, it could not harm anyone.
The boys would fall into the agentic state because they would always take commands from jack and do what they were told. Jack commanded them to go hunt and kill Ralph.
In an agentic state:
-individuals act as agents for the others
-their own consciences are not in control
