Talk to Yourself

Who Developed the Ideas

Sigmund Freud

The idea that our behavior is driven by unconscious motives was put forth by Sigmund Freud, who said that the mind is like an iceberg, and that only a small part is revealed to conscious awareness, while the bigger, deeper reasons for our actions lie beneath the surface.

Abraham Maslow

Abraham Maslow, who is best known for his work on the Hierarchy of Needs, also said that unconscious motives take a central role in determining how people behave. He said that any action must be understood by looking at what basic need it satisfies and more often than not, it is our unconscious rather than conscious motives that direct our behaviour.

Unconscious Motivation

Drawbacks

  • You are unable to explain your actions and you are not aware of these motivations.
  • It cannot be consciously controlled
  • it is only related to everything that happens in your unconscious mind and gives no regard to the conscious mind.
  • Many of the concepts central to Freud's theories are subjective and as much impossible to scientifically test.

Limitations

  • Case Studies - Subjective / Cannot generalize results
  • Unscientific (lacks empirical support)
  • Too Deterministic (little free-will)
  • Biased Sample (e.g. middle aged women from Vienna)
  • Ignores Mediational Processes (e.g. thinking, memory)
  • Rejects Free will (e.g. Humanism believe free will exists)
  • Unfalsifiable (difficult to prove wrong)

Positive Aspects

  • You can do things that you unconsciously desire and it is instinctive.
  • Unconscious motives could cause us to do good things.
  • This theory for the first time revealed the presence of the unconscious mind and how powerful it is in controlling your actions.
  • one can understand his/herself better and see ones inner self in a better light.

Most Commonly Seen

When you have no rational explanation for your action

How It Works

The unconscious mind is the largest part of the human mind holding thoughts and memories about which person is unaware; includes unacceptable sexual and aggressive urges, thoughts, and feelings.

Your unconscious desires cause you to behave in a certain way they are the real reasons behind your actions.
