Justice
"I sat down and the judge pronounced Walter free to go. Just like that he was a free man."(225)
For some, justice was able to be achieved through years of hard work from Bryan Stevenson. He was able to save countless innocent from death row. Justice may mean being proven not gulity, but it could truly mean being free from a wrongful conviction of people who can easily discriminate innocent people. The photo is was i precieved as being free from tyranny, and the quote is the moment when Walter, a man imprisoned for six year, was finally released.
Racial inequality
"engaged in interracial dating often found themselves involuntarily committed"(187)
One of the reason many people were wrongfully convicted was because of there skin color, and many times, for that reason, some were not permitted to have a lawyer or a fair trial and often sentenced to life in prison easliy. The image represents a similar ideal to separation of races, each individual different, but still the same type of human. And the quote states as evidence as to what happens when to races so against socitey norms.
"In prison, he was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted. He attempted suicide on multiple occasions. He developed multiple sclerosis, which eventually forced him into a wheelchair. (259)
Throughout the story, the author including the gruesome details about the abuse of the falsely accused and often times, the people are left with mental scars and disabilities. In a chapter, children who were wrongfully convicted, were the ones who became the most emotional damaged. From the picture, a man is severely beating another man, which represents the dehumanization of them both. And the text shows a real life example of the dehumanization that happened in our country, but still isn't being dealt with.
Oppression
"People who were gay, resisted gender norms, or engaged in interracial dating often found themselves involuntarily committed."(187)
Both the picture and quote express how people who are accused of being different, are often being discriminated in the justice system. The picture itself represent someone being oppressed and incarcerated for speaking out from society norms. And the text describes how people were actually discriminated in the past. The author includes the people who were convicted, to be oppressed for there difference.
"The only evidence to implicate Joe was a latent partial palm print...There was a great deal to say that was never said."(257)
Much of the story is based on that fact that there are too many innocent people being incarcerated. The personal stories dictate that the accused is not given a fair trial because of some indifference concerning the individual, or quite possibly, wrong place, wrong time. The picture is an indication of imprisonment, being in handcuffs is like feeling trapped and not being able to escape, and the quote was the trial in which a young teeanger is accused of sexual assualt and burglary, he was then put in prison for life, at the age of 13.
