Coaching Conversation

Student Accountability

Focus Lesson

"We end every conference with asking kids to tell us again what their goal and strategy are. After all, it is their reading, their goal, and their strategy, not ours. They need to internalize them, and the best way to accomplish that is through constant reminders and articulation."

"Holding students accountable for reading is something we always keep in mind, which is why the goals and expectations we set for them are high."

1. We identify what is to be taught, and share the "secret to success" with the strategy.

2. We teach the strategy: we model, reinforce, or explain the strategy in 1 - 5 minutes.

3. Students practice with partners.

4. Select a student to write and illustrate the CAFE Menu strategy card.

5. Review the strategy.

6. Encourage practice during independent reading times.

7. Post the strategy after independent practice.

8. Continually connect new strategies to strategies already on the CAFE Menu board.

How it works together

We share words that are interesting to us!

"The structure of the Daily Five allows us to purposefully and effectively focus on the needs of our readers. The CAFE Menu helps us intentionally teach strategies that will help students achieve their goals."

"Typically once or twice a week we even find ourselves bringing in a newspaper or magazine article with an interesting or wonderful word to share. Showing children that we pay attention to interesting words outside of school also helps them with their vocabulary development beyond the walls of our classrooms."
