Presentation / Style / Graphics

There are many "styles" out on Afro-Futurism, mainly stuff of African Americans with a penchant for Science Fiction. what is our lens?

THINK we should aknowledge this position as one of the many ways to read the term Afro-Futurism, and declare our own position alongside this, a position for Architecture.

At the core Afrofuturism accommodates diversity, creolization, migration, the concept of relation and multiplicity, it accepts and opens invitation to be appropriated and interpreted

PRESENTATIONS should be serious/ slick/ clear/ intelligent with a touch of the quirky

GRAPHICS: general wink to triangle structures? creating triangular patterns?

Power of Making

The importance of being skilled

Ubuntu reflects a world defined by unprecedented global connection and the resurgence of local, community based organization.

Edited by Daniel Charny, V&A Publishing and the Crafts Council, published in 2011, London

• a celebration of the empowering nature of making and the human instinct to create

• encourages debate on the nature and importance of making

• Making: one of the most significant means of human expression, and simply something that humans can do.

• For some people making is critical to their survival, for others its a way of learning, enjoying life and solving problems...

• Making is the universal infrastructure of creative production, techical, artistic, scientific or cultural

• Though intentions and conditions vary, all makers participate in the unique human experience that comes from being completely engrossed in creative activity. Being ‘in the zone' is as much experienced by a 4 year old as an experienced master.

• Yet despite all the value that exists in making, fewer people know how to make things, nor how things are made. one of the unfortunate legacies of the industrial revolution that has shaped the world we live in

• The distance between the maker and the user is growing, with it, knowledge, understanding..

• Applied thinking lies at the core of creating new knowledge of all kinds.

• Martina Margetts:

"Making is a revelation, of the human impulse to explore and express forms of knowledge and a range of emotions.

• Sir Christopher Frayling

Bauhaus manifesto misunderstood

Walter Gropius and fellows; crafts were not something romantic and nostalgic, but rather a way to look ahead. The time is right he says, for the art and industry to visibly embrace what crafts have become.
