Egwugwu

Who Are They?

How Are They Celebrated?

The Egwugwu are village elders in masks that are seen as ancestral gods.

A ceremony is held to present the Egwugwu. They leave from a secret house and sit in front the two opposing parties.

Purpose

They are used to settle disputes amongst the people in Umofia.

What Is the Egwugwu?

The Egwugwu is the judicial system in Igbo culture

They are well respected by the people of Umofia. The people come to them for help and guidance.

How Are they viewed by society?

Relationship with Okonkwo

They are feared by the women and children even though they now they are men impersonating spirits.

It is believed by the people of Umofia that Okonkwo is one of the masked Egwugwu.

They are asked to judge whether or not a group of men should return a wife to another man even though he abuses her in Chapter 10.
