In the myth everyone got what they wanted. Apollo received Hermes lyre, and Hermes received Heralds Staff and the rest of Apollo's cattle, but Hermes stole Apollo's cattle when he could have just asked for it. In society nobody should ever steal. If it is a reasonable thing people can give you our lend to you, you should ask.
When Hermes was an infant he grew very fast. Not so long after his birth he was able to walk. when he could walk he made a lyre out of a tortoise shell, but he needed the strings. To get the strings his plan was to steal the cattle of his half brother Apollo, and he did just that. Hermes made the cattle walk backward so their tracks would lead Apollo the wrong way. Hermes soon killed the cows and made the strings out of their guts.
The moral of this myth is to ask for something with a reason instead of stealing something without one. Asking for something can lead to a win win conclusion.
When Apollo found out that Hermes stole his cattle, he brought Hermes father Zeus. Zeus was more amused than mad at Hermes. Hermes showed them his Lyre and started playing. Apollo became very fond of the Lyre and offered the rest of his cattle in return for the Lyre. Apollo also gave Hermes Heralds golden staff, which is now one of Hermes symbols.
