A Journey To Die For

By Maddie Mitchell, Haley Rosso, and Sean Lee

Book 9 is a flashback.

Odysseus is on the Phaecian Shore in the hospitality of King Alcinous, and narrating the story. He tells of the Battle of the Cicones, where he and his men

accidentally sailed in the Cicones stronghold in

Ismarus. Odysseus "sacked the city, [and] killed

the men" (9.46-47). Six of his crew members died in the battle yet the rest escaped with the loot and

continued the journey.

They sailed for 9 days and reached the land of the Lotus-eaters. Here the scouting party tasted the Lotus-flower and refused to return back to the ship and continue home. Odysseus had to bring them back to reality and force them to return to their journey.

They sailed on and reached the land of the

Cyclops. Odysseus and his crew encounter

Polyphemus and he eats two of his men. Infuriated,

Odysseus makes Polyphemus drunk with wine and

tells the Cyclops his name is "Nobody." With time running out, Odysseus and his crew took their stake they had sharpened earlier with a flaming tip and gouged out Polyphemus' eye. They escaped the following day by taking advantage of the Cyclops' lack of sight, by hiding underneath his own sheep's bellies.
