2008 Afghanistan Blizzard

By Amaru Ordonez, Grace Koenig, Ashley Louthan

Where did our event occur?

What were the short-term ecological impacts of the event?

Afghanistan

Take notes

The freeze killed plant leaves (therefore killing the plants) and froze the ground (also killing the plants).

What were the long-term ecological impacts of the event?

Last slide

It temporarily lowered the population plant-wise, animal-wise, and people-wise. Some people weren't able to work because their hands or feet were amputated.

More Info

Take Notes

The blizzard cut off roadways. This led to making the assistance to affected areas slow. It also severed connections with other countries, so international help was also delayed.

What is the area like now?

What was our catastrophic event?

The area is mountainous, has vegetation, has deserts, and is very dry.

Our catastophic event was the 2008 Afghan blizzard. A blizzard is a storm with dry, driving snow, strong winds (at least 35 mph), intense cold, prolonged (lasts for a long time), covers a wide area, and you have low visibility.

Info About the Blizzard

Take notes

It happened in February, 2008 in the country of Afghanistan. Around 926 people died, but many more deaths were not recorded. Over 100,000 domesticated animals (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.), and at least 100 people had limbs amputated because of frostbite. Over 730 homes were destroyed. Temperatures fell to -30 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the lowest recorded temperature in 30 years! The snow got as deep as 2 meters (79 inches).

Why did it occur?

Continue to take notes (Please)

Because of Afghanistan's warm climate, lot of moisture is stored in the atmosphere which came in contact with cool arctic air. The high pressure from the climate came in contact with polar air creating high-powered winds. Then water vapor merged with high pressure and arctic air, thus creating a blizzard.

What was the are like before the event?

Mountainous, dry desert area. Funny place to have a blizzard.

We're not done with notes yet!

What was the area like immediately after the event?

Keep taking notes

There wasn't much vegetation left. The ground was completely covered in hard, compact snow. There was no soil or water for the plants to grow. It was horrible.

Thanks For Watching!
