BANDWAGON APPEAL

LOADED LANGUAGE

Word like EVERYONE appeal to people's desire

to belong

Loaded Language uses words such as

incredibly and delicious. These are claims

that cannot be proven.

Notes for the Educators using this Prezi:

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS?????????

The R is Rhetorical Questions

Testimonials

In our eighth grade standards, we teach these five techniques used in advertising. The goal is to get the students to recognize them in advertising and then to be able to use them themselves in their own creation of an advertisement. I came up with the device about BLTs because most 8th graders love bacon, or sandwiches at least and can remember that they are "Good".

I have created the presentation to be in the same format/steps that I would encourage educators to use in the classroom. Feel free to add to the lesson. For example, one assignment would be to have the students create a powerpoint presentation themselves of each technique.

GENERALIZATIONS

Rhetorical Questions ask a question that has an obvious answer, but it does not prove the product is good.

Have you ever thought about going back to college?

The G is for Generalizations.

The "T" is for Testimonials. People who are famous or have influence are used to persuade consumers.

Wouldn't you like to stay healthy?

Generalizations make claims that are too broad or vague and cannot be proven.

Reading Skill: Evaluate Persuasive Appeals

Just because an "expert" or celebrity says it, doesn't mean it's true.

Advertisements often combine different types of persuasive appeals. The best way to evaluate the treatment of persuasive appeals is to SEPARATE arguments that appeal to the emotions from those that appeal to the mind. Analyze the images and text of ads to understand their appeal. Then, weigh the reasons for and against buying the product. We will look at common persuasive devices.

PERSUASIVE APPEALS IN ADVERTISING

In order to help students remember the

techniques advertisers use to persuade

consumers, Bandwagon Appeal, Loaded Language, Testimony, Rhetorical Questions and Generalizations are the five presented in 8th grade standards. The mnemonic device "BLTsRGood" can be used. (BLTs are good)

The first letter, B is for Bandwagon Appeal. The following slide has 2 examples of this. Bandwagon Appeal seeks to persuade the consumer that "everyone" is doing it, so the consumer needs to do it too. It's good old fashioned peer pressure.
