Jo never expected the books to become as big of a success as they did. When she was discussing the publication of the first Harry Potter book with her publisher, he'd told her she most likely wouldn't make too much money off of it. She says she'd thought the same thing. The exact opposite happened. She made billions of dollars. The books became successful enough to become a multi-million dollar movie franchise. The success of the books has made her the first person to become a billionaire from writing. But because Joanne is so wonderful, a lot of her money has gone to charities.
Jo has helped many charities and even co-owns a charity called Lumos. After graduating from university, Jo worked for Amnesty International where she spent time researching about the abuses of human rights in Francophone Africa. In 2001, two short books entitled "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and "Quidditch Throughout the Ages" were published and the money that was made from these books went to Comic Relief. Also, in 2008, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" was published and made $1.95 million, which went to Lumos. She was an ambassador for Gingerbread and later became the honorary president of Gingerbread. These are only a few examples of how she cares for the well being of others.
The idea for Harry Potter came to J.K. Rowling on a delayed train from Manchester to London. It took her almost seven years to complete the first book. After completion, she sent the book to nine different publishers, who all rejected it. The book was eventually published by Bloomsbury Children's Books. They requested that she added another initial to her name to make it sound less feminine so it would be more attractive to young boys. She decided to add the initial "K" which she got from her grandmother Kathleen's name.
