The Battle of New Orleans

1814- British troops were planning to attack

the United States from the South- in New Orleans.

So Andrew Jackson and his rural

troops were waiting for them.

Jackson's troops just knew that they would win.

The Battle took place on January 8, 1815, and is said to be one of the greatest American victories.

There were only 20 American casualties, and out of the 8,ooo British soldiers, 2,ooo were either killed or wounded.

Neither sides knew that the Battle was useless. They didn't have cell phones back then, so it wasn't like they could text each other and say "Hey, we're over here in Ghent, Belgium signing a treaty, so u can just call the Battle off!" They didn't even have e-mail!

Just to show you how slow communication was, they had signed the treaty

2 weeks before the battle began!

The War Ends (The war of 1812)

Well, this war had divided the entire nation's views.

Many federalists from New England were opposed to the war.

December of 1814- delegates from New England met (secretly) in Hartford, CT. This was called the Hartford Convention, and talked about forming a confederacy of the New England States.

Before the delegates could meet with the President about their demands, the news (slow once again) about the Battle of New Orleans came, forcing them to abandon their demands.

The Federalist party was not heard from much after.

The Treaty of Ghent

it was signed on Christmas Eve of 1814.

IT ended the fighting, but never really gave either side anything.

Neither side gained or lost any territory.

Most Americans felt proud and confident at the end of the war.

The young nation (America) had finally gained some respect!!
