Comes from 'Land of Angles' which was which was translated 'Engla Land' in old English.

First time anyone used modern day word for England was in the first century of our modern era when Tacitus used the latin word 'Angli"

First time it was spelled as it is today was in 1538

England was invaded by Rome in 46 AD after being inhabited by barbarians in the past. During the 11th century England was being settled by tribes from Northern Europe. The largest of these tribes was the Angles. They called their new found land 'Angleland."
