In Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins, there is a variety of characters presented throughout the book. With it being a two part story, Perkins has multiple characters. Chiko, Tai, The Sergeant, and The Captain are the main characters of the first part. Chiko and Tai become friends when tricked into the Burmese army, teaching each other life skills they need to survive. The Sergeant U-Tha-Din, along with the boys, don't like the menacing Captain. In part two, Tu Reh, Ree Meh, Nya Meh, and Chiko are the main characters. Tu Reh is a Karenni tribal member who goes on a journey with his "Peh," but ends up on a return home mission. The squad soon stumbles upon a group of Burmese soldiers. Tu Reh then becomes the guardian and assistant of Chiko, the remaining Burmese soldier, taking him back to his tribe, where they must decide whether to allow him to stay or leave hime in the jungle to die.

Setting:
Throughout the story, part one and part two consist of multiple locations. In Part One, Chiko begins as a boy in a poor family in rural Burma. Over the course of the story, he goes to the Burma/Thailand border, through jungles, and to various locations within the dense jungle. Likewise, in Part Two, Tu Reh remains in a somewhat similar place, within the jungle and in his tribe's camp. Overall, diverse locations are presented to the reader in Bamboo People.
Plot/Summary
Chiko isn't a fighter, but a book-smart Burmese boy. He lives with his mom only, because his dad was imprisoned for resisting the government. Chiko is eventually tricked into joining the army, where his journey begins...
Tu Reh is from the Karennni tribe, one which hates the Burmese. Tu Reh will never forget the image of Burmese soldiers burning his home, therefore he has no mercy for them. Although, when Tu Reh is presented a task, he becomes less angry and more compassionate. Both Tu Reh and Chiko are given their first mission into the jungle, where both journeys are violently intersected. Both must prove themselves a man to their people.

5. Chiko is sent on a mission to seize stolen supplies.

Rising Action: Part 1
1. Tu Reh finally embarks on a mission with his "Peh"
2. Tu Reh and his squad come upon Burmese soldiers in the jungle
3. Tu Reh is given the task of bringing the wounded remaining soldier back to camp.
4. Tu Reh brings the soldier back to camp, but he is ruled out as a traitor.
5. The tribe council must decide whether to let Chiko stay or to leave in the jungle to die.
6. CLIMAX
Rising Action: Part 2
Chiko finds himself in the Burmese Army, with a decapitated leg, being carried by Tu Reh to safety. Tu Reh is sent on a mission back home, with Chiko on his back. Both survive, but have difficulty in the near future. Tu Reh is ruled out as a traitor for rescuing the soldier, while Chiko is the one himself, with no leg. There are two conflicts, one for each character of the two parts of the story.
Conflict:
Tu Reh brings Chiko back to his camp, where the tribe council must decide whether to allow Chiko to stay in camp, or release him into the jungle, alone.
Daily life goes back to normal, but tensions between Burma and The Karenni still remain...
