Urban Realms Model

By Lauren Davis

What is it?

How was it created?

Criteria

The Urban Realms Model describes the spatial components of the modern metropolis, where each realm is a separate economic, social, and political entity that is linked together to form the larger metropolitan framework. It consists of a central business district, central city, new downtown, suburban downtown, and edge cities with self-sufficient urban areas and independent focal points.

James E. Vance Jr.

The nature of these realms is examined through the lens of four criteria:

  • The topological terrain of the area (water barriers and mountains)
  • The size of the metropolis as a whole
  • The amount and strength of economic activities taking place in each of the realms
  • The internal accessibilitiy of each realm relating to its major economic core.

The Urban Realms Model was created by James E. Vance Jr. in the 1960s to improve upon the Multiple Nuclei Model and show how outer cities shape the central city. It was created in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Is It Applicable Today?

The Urban Realms Model is still applicable today because many edge cities and suburbs still show CBD components.
