Women in the Workforce

During the war, women replaced their husbands in factories.

The War Manpower Commission, a Fed. Agency increased the manufacture of war materials and recruited women to work for the war effort.

After the war, women returned home but they had made a lasting impact. Women in the workforce was a common sight after a few decades.

Spark of the Civil Rights Movement

WWII was the first war that African Americans were created equal on the battle field.

After the war, they weren't treated with the same respect due to Jim Crow laws.

Many soldiers decided to join the Civil Rights movement and regain the respect they had during the war.

$200 million worth of war bonds matured.

Brought America out of the Great Depression.

Shifting From Military Production to Civilian Production

Industries boomed but farmers were hurt by overproduction.

GI Bill: provided education and job opportunities to veterans.

End of war brought end to rationing.

Demographic Changes

Influx of immigrants from northern/western Europe, esp. Jewish refugees.

Majority of immigrants were female.

Couples who couldn't afford families during the Great Depression made up for lost time and during the time of economic prosperity after the war.

In 1946, the birth rate of Americans increased 5.71% and birth rates continued to be high until the mid 50's

Automobile, aviation, and electronic production rose.
