In the 9th century Malta was inhabited by the Arabs.
Later, in the 16th century the island became
the property of the Order of Malta.
The island was besieged many times
but the knights successfully drove back all attacks
(by that time the island had been well fortified)

Diving is the most popular sport activity on the island.
Tourist industry is very important to the economy.
Malta is very well fortified because for many years
it was the stronghold of the Order of the Maltese Knights.
Its warm sea attracts lots of tourists and that contributes greatly to the country’s prosperity.
The country has some big and popular English Language Schools.

The Order, however, survived and remained on the island. In 1814 Malta became the British colony and English became the official language. In 1987 Malta became independent Republic but retained English
as the official language.
