Gender Differences...

at the Movies

We went to AMC Theaters in Yorktown at approximately 1:00pm on May 12th. We went up to the balcony of the theater right above the concession stand to observe the customers. To standardize our results, whoever bought the food item, we took his/her results. We did not attempt to control any extraneous variables because it was a naturalistic observation and we tried to stay out of our subjects' environment as much as possible. We tallied our results onto a chart. Shur observed the people and told Jamie what gender the buyer was, while Jamie tallied the results.

In the end, we found that the correlation between how many concessions were bought overall between males and females were practically the same.

However, we did notice that women purchased smaller portions of food while males purchased bigger portions. Since we tallied the person that bought the food, and not the person that ate it, our results could have errors. Also, many people shared food, so we did not know what gender to mark for our results. An extraneous variable that got in the way of our study was the age factor. Some younger people tend to buy smaller sizes and more candy as opposed to older people. We can improve this study by actually seeing what the people eat, not what they buy. Also, we should take into account what size is purchased.

Thanks for Watching!

Statistics

  • Males prefer warm, hearty, meal-related comfort foods. Females prefer snack related comfort foods (Wansink 2003).
  • Men are more likely to want meat, while women are less interested in meat but crave sweets. These cravings seem to be linked to hormones ("Food Preference...").
  • Relating to restaurants, women are looking for somewhere comfortable while somewhere to show off (Bruni 2008).
  • At the grocery store, findings indicate that men take fewer items and take less time to complete the shopping task. They seldom compare prices, seek assistance, or use shopping lists (Mortimer & Clarke).
  • "More girls than boys felt guilt about food, ate from boredom, reported trying to select foods that were good for them and were concerned about the fat content of food." (Nowak 2008).

Naturalistic Observation

What is the difference between how much food overall and what kinds of food males bought compared to females at the movie theater.

We were interested to see if gender effects how much food and what types of food people eat.

We thought the movie theater would be a good place to conduct this study.

Hypothesis

We predict that males

will buy more

concessions than females.

Results

Concessions are the different options of food available at the movie theater. They include popcorn, soda, candy, water, and nachos/pretzels.
