The main meal was eaten in the afternoon & evening, when Rome was busy selling spicy pies, sausages and many types of stews that consisted of meats & spices. Traditionally at Roman banquets the guests were served 600 ostrich brains and peas mixed with golden leaves. Romans cleaned themselves by going to the public baths or spa's and sauna's if they didn't have a bath at home which in most cases they didn't because only the rich could afford cleaning services in their house. In the public baths slaves (people who have committed crimes in Rome or in other countries) poured oil on the people in the baths and scraped it off with something called a Strigil which is a metal tool that scrapes of the oil of your body. The oil that they used acted like modern day soap even though it was a liquid. Everybody in Rome's population wanted to be clean, be happy with their appearance and keep healthy so they built spa's, sauna's, public baths, lavatory's and bath houses for the soldiers/ military to use.
