TERRITORIES

Because of the cold arctic climate and its isolation, only 100,000 people live there.

It is known for its forestry products, mining, shipping and fishing industries.

It has 600 parks and a temperate climate.

The area is rich in history, with Newfoundland and Labrador known as the oldest colony of the British Empire.

But who were the first Europeans to come here ?

PACIFIC REGION

THE PRAIRIES

This is where more than half of the population of Canada lives. This region is the industrial and manufacturing heartland of Canada.

The region is famous for rich energy resources - oil and gas - and some of the most fertile farmlands in the world.

Central Canada

Jacques Cartier claimed the Gulf of St Lawrence for France in 1534 and named the area Canada.

In 1999, the Northwest Territories was divided into two territories to create Nunavut, a homeland for Canada’s Inuits.

Around 4 million immigrants arrived from England, Ireland and Scotland in the 19th century.

The first inhabitants of North America arrived in Canada at least 14,000 years ago.

After the Battle of Quebec,

the French colonies became British in 1763 but

the French language was recognised in Quebec.

The ancestors of today's Inuit moved east into

Arctic Canada and Greenland 1,000 years ago.

CANADA'S HISTORY

Canada obtained complete autonomy in 1931.

But other First Peoples started to expand their territories southward 11,000 years ago, as plants and animals colonized new lands. ( . dated archaeological site)

Samuel de Champlain established a French colony at Quebec City in 1608.

In 1831 Indigenous children started to be sent

to boarding schools where they would lose

their identity, language and culture.

The last boarding school was closed in ... 1996 !

There were about 500,000 Aboriginal people in 1600.

By 1867, it is thought that between 100,000 and 125,000 First Nations people remained... A real massacre !

The King of England supported John Cabot's expedition to Newfoundland and Cape Breton in 1497.

First Nations peoples developed their own culture and customs.
