Odysseus Strings His Bow

Book 21

Realization-Confront

The Promise/Deal

Proving its him, Odysseus show the scar from where a Boars white tusk had gored him years ago. Promising and making a deal with his only two loyal men if he were to beat all the suitors- he will find both of them wives, grant them property, sturdy houses beside his own, and in his eyes be the brothers of Prince Telemachus.

Finally suitors began to realize - they fell far short of the strength the bow required. Doing so, the kings two men ( cowherd & swineherd ) left the palace with Odysseus disguised as a old man following them. Yelling to them if he could tell them a secret or keep it to himself? Asking if they would fight by Odysseus side or the kings side? Suitors saying in reply a prayer to Zeus to bring him back. And from there Odysseus reveals himself

Failure

The Plan

Continuously one by one suitors come up trying to string Odysseus bow. They did many things trying to make it easier to string. Suitors limbered the bow, rubbing it down with hot grease but still struggled to bend it.

Odysseus, Cowherd, and Swineherd all stood outside making the plan of what should happen. Eumaeus was to bring the bow to him and place it in his hands. Then tell the serving women to lock their doors to their room. Philoetius himself had to shoot he bolt of the courtyards outer gate, lock it, lash it fast.

Announcing the Contest

Inspired by the goddess Athena, Penelope gets Odysseus Bow out to set before the suitors, to test their skill. If a suitor were to string it properly and then shoot an arrow through a line of twelve axes, she will marry them.

Plan in Action

Setting and Starting It

Eumaeus the good swineherd sets up the gleaming axes before the suitors. Telemachus positions them in a straight line very accurately. He himself was first to try and did not succeed. Finally giving up after the forth time, he set the bow down for others to try. Antinous keeping the line in order and urging people to try.

Still disguised as a old man Odysseus goes to the suitors who have decided to resume the contest tomorrow and said if he could test the bow to see if he could do it even with his old hands. To test his strength to see if he still had it. Suitors went into fear, fearing that he might just string the polish bow. Feud with Centaur and mortal men began after that - but Telemachus settling it himself then telling the Swineherd to give the old man the bow. Swineherd doing as the plan said and told the women to lock their doors. Cowherd doing the same as told and locked the gates. When coming back in after locking the gates he saw to Odysseus to begin. Suitors mocking him, Odysseus still continued on. Fixed the bow to how he wants it, stringed it. Then released- making it through all 12 axes.
