Compulsory Sterilization

What is it?

Surgical Sterilization

Compulsory Sterilization (Canada)

The Ablerta Sexual Sterilization Act.

It began in 1928 to 1972, during these years over 2800 procedures were performed.

In 1937 the amendment to the act allowed sterilizations to be done without consent if the person was

regarded as mentally defective.

In july 1933 passed their own sexual sterilization act. Any person whom was capable of propagating undersirable social characteristics was authorized to be sterilized.

Social problems included prostitution, criminalization, and addiction/alcholism.

All records concerning B.C's sexual sterilization act have been lost or destroyed.

Three conditions that are necessary for an individual to undergo any medical procedure:

  • The individual must be informed of both the nature and risks/benefits of the procedure.
  • The consent must be voluntary, not the product of coercion, threat or fraud.
  • The individual must be competent enough to give the above consent.
