Election of 1852

Almost 5,000 pro-slavery voters crossed border from MO, voted in Kansas and left-> New Legislature Pro-slavery!

John Brown wanted

to start the 2nd slave uprising

(remember the 1st)

Lincoln insisted he would not change slavery but it would not expand and eventually die out completely.

Wanted to attack the federal

arsenal in VA and

seize weapons there

(100,000.muskets & rifles)

Planned to arm local slaves

and kill or take hostage

southerners who stood

in his way. Once news got out,

believed local slaves

would join the fight.

Strict laws passed-> Crime to question slaveholders rights

Put to death those who helped runaway slaves

Main issue-> Debate over

expansion of slavery!!

Supported :

Compromise of 1850 and Fugitive Slave Act helping him to win election.

December 20, 1860 SC leaves the Union

Southerners felt their way of life was threatened

Kansas has 2 opposing govts.

Brown, John Brown

Brown was convicted of treason, murder, & conspiracy

Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana,

and Texas followed S.C. & seceded to form the Confederate States of America aka the Confederacy.

Kansas collapsed into civil war.

Pro-slavery jury charged leaders of anti-slavery government with treason in Lawrence, Ks.

South Carolina's legislature called for convention

a week after Lincoln was elected

200 people were killed.

John Brown was an abolitionist from

New England.

" I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." Elected Jefferson Davis as

President of the CSA.

Discussed secession from the union

Moved with some of his sons to Kansas.

Had about 21 men, 16 white and

5 ex-slaves . In the evening, Overpowered

armory guards & took 60 hostages.

8 of Brown's men killed,

his 2 sons wounded

Brown fled to a firehouse.

Oct 18th, Colonel

Robert E. Lee stormed

the firehouse and

captured Brown.

Events in "Bleeding Kansas"

became national

front-page stories.

States had voluntarily joined the

Union so they should be

free to leave. -> States Rights!!

May 24, 1856,

Brown and his

men killed

5 pro-slavery men.

800 pro-slavery men rode out to Lawrence to arrest the anti-slavery leaders but they fled!!

Sack of Lawrence

made him

determined

to fight back

Ordered to be hung December , 1859

Southerner Sympathies

John Crittenden(KY) proposed

constitutional amendments that

he believed would keep the South

happy by protecting slavery.

Lincoln swore to preserve

the union at whatever

the cost.

Buchanan & Lincoln agreed

states could not leave the union

unless by revolution.

South feel need threatened and

fearful of others will incite

attacks ->want to leave Union

Lincoln disagreed with

Crittenden and had every

Republican reject it.

Congress reacted!

Senator Charles Sumner(MA)

was beaten unconscious

by Preston Brooks (SC) for insulting

his relative Andrew Pickens Butler (SC)

a pro-slavery senator.

Took their anger out on

Lawrence by setting fires,

looting buildings and

destroying businesses.

Stephen Douglas senator from Illinois.

Proposed a railroad from Chicago

to the Pacific Ocean.

Democrats were divided.

Lincoln had a unified

Republican Party.

Republican Party is formed in 1854:Made up of Whigs, Northern Democrats, Free-Soilers and Abolitionists.

Lose election to Democratic James Buchanan who neither supported nor opposed Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Southerners did not support

Douglas' plan.

Douglas asked a few

southern senators to support plan.

Agreed only if the new territory west

of Missouri was opened to slavery.

Wanted to build the railroad

through what was left of the

Louisiana Territory.

Eliminated Missouri Compromise

restriction on slavery.

Outraged Northerners-> Protest meetings held,

Petitions to Congress sent!

1854- Douglas introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

Divided the remainder of the LA Purchase into Kansas and Nebraska.

Allowed the people in each territory to decide slave or free.

Southerners supported!

Promised not to abolish slavery

where it already existed.

They wanted a railroad from

New Orleans to Southern California.

Happened 2 days after Buchanan

became president.

The Missouri Compromise

required this land to be free

territory=free states.

1858 Lincoln(R) nominated for U.S. Senate

Went against Stephen Douglas(D)

Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney ruling=

- black people, whether enslaved or free are not

citizens of U.S.

-living in free territory did not make slaves free

-Missouri Compromise unconstitutional

-under 5th amendment slaves were property

Lincoln challenged Douglas 7 times in

what became the historic Lincoln Douglas debates!

Central issue was the Spread of Slavery !

We were taken from a

slave state to free territories

so we should be free!!

Lincoln lost but gained

national recognition!

Increased tensions & spread of slavery!!
