Syllabus

Theme of Jealousy

RODERIGO CHARACTERIZATION

  • Internal Conflict
  • Tragic Flaw

She says enough, yet she’s a simple bawd

That cannot say as much. This is a subtle whore,

A closet, lock and key, of villainous secrets.

And yet she’ll kneel and pray, I have seen her do ’t.

(4.2.19-22)

Othello questions Emilia about Desdemona's conduct. He sends for his wife and accuses her of cheating with Michael Cassio. Because of Othello's behaviour, Desdemona is very upset. Emilia tries to comfort her, then goes to get her own husband, Iago. Iago tries to comfort Desdemona, then leaves to continue to manipulate Roderigo into attacking Cassio later that night.

The fountain from which my current runs

Or else dries up - to be disgraded thence!

Or keep it as a cistern for foul toads

To knot and gender in! (4.2.58-61)

DESDEMONA CHARACTERIZATION

Elements of Tragedy

Dramatic Purpose

Appearance vs Reality

Historical/Social Issues

A Scene may reveal a character or it may show a development of a character

Biblical Allusion

Sweet and faithful to disowning Othello as a husband when she talks to Emilia.

(4.2 97-102)

  • Desdemona believes that Iago really cares about her.
  • When in reality, Iago is just using her for his plan.
  • He's making himself look good by comforting her.

Luck, Chance and/or Fate

It is my wretched fortune. (4.2.127)

  • Shows contrast during the play because we see their rise and fall.

O thou public commoner (4.2.72)

Othello starts getting angry with Emilia, and it shows how the character ( Othello ) develops in a negative way.

Develpoing Pathos

" Yes, You have seen Cassio and she together " (Line 3)

I durst, my lord, to wager she is honest,

Lay down my soul at stake. (4.2.11-12)

  • Emilia makes reference to a historical/social issue during the Elizabethian period when women who were suspected of being witches, where burned alive at a stake without any proof.

"What is your pleasure, madam? How is ’t with you?" (line 109)

Let Heaven requite it with the serpent's curse

For if she be not honest, chaste, and true

There's no man happy (4.2.15-17)

We start to feel bad for Desdemona, because she no longer feels the same about Othello

" I have none. Do not talk to me Emily..." (Line 101)

Verbal Irony

Othello's Soliloquy

Desdemona's Soliloquy

Othello is saying that he believes that Emilia, is covering for Desdemona, and othello calls Desdemona a whore, and says she has a ton of secrets.

Dramatic Irony

Beshrew him for't!

How comes this trick upon him?(4.2.127-128)

THEME:MANIPULATION

Desdemona doesn't understand why othello is treating her like this, because she knows she hasn't done anything wrong

"...This is a subtle whore, / A closet lock and key of villainous secrets..." ( line 20-21)

" ...How have I been behav'd that he might stick/ The smallest opinion on my least misuse?" ( line 106-108)

I will be hang'd if some eternal villian,

Some busy and insinuating rogue,

Some cogging, cozening slave, to get some office,

Have not devis'd this slander; I'll be hang'd else.

(4.2.129-132)

Iago once again manipulates Roderigo by lying and making him stay in Cyprus and help kill Cassio. (there is nothing in it for Roderigo)
