America's European Problems

  • FRANCE and Great Britain Went to war in 1793.
  • The French wanted the Americans to help out.

Problem with Helping France

75% of America's trade was with Britain, and TARIFFS on British goods helped to pay American debt.

Helping France out would of left America bankrupt.

Neutrality

What is Neutral?

Washington declared that America was going to be NEUTRAL in order to keep the peace between the French and British.

A French Minister

Edmond Genet tested Washington's neutral act. GENET came for troops and for money. Washington order him to go back to France.

Genet begged Washington to stay in America because he feared for his life in France.

Treaty with Britain

The Jay treaty was completed late in 1794. The British promised to EVACUATE their American forts if America allowed them to continue their fur trades.

Alexander spoke of the trade in New York and was stoned for it.

Washington Steps Down

Washington wanted to RETIRE after his first term of president, but Hamilton and Jefferson asked him to run again.

Washington would run with no opposition and would win for a second term, however, he enjoyed it less then the first term.

Jefferson Resigns from the Cabinet

Jefferson and Hamilton didn't get a long and when forced to choose, Washington went with Hamilton.

Jefferson would leave Washington's CABINET in 1793.

Farewell Address

Washington's last major act was giving his farewell address. In his FAREWELL address Washington explained why he wasn't running for a third term.

Washington left behind him a proud legacy. Washington did a nice job tackling the debt and did a nice showing the federal's government strength by stopping the Whiskey Rebellion.
