Eversion Ankle Sprain

Signs & Symptoms of Injury

Damaged Structure

Present around the deltoid ligament and medial malleolus

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Loss of Motion
  • Loss of Function
  • Unstable Joint

Medial ligament of the foot (deltoid) is torn

Classified into three categories:

  • 1° (Micro Tear)
  • 2° (Partial Tear)
  • 3° (Complete Tear)

Prevention Methods

Treatment/Management

Common Mechanisms of Injury

Support ankle by:

  • Taping
  • Bracing

Strengthen ankle by:

  • Performing stretches that increase ankle flexibility

Protect from further injury (crutches).

Rest from activites that cause limping/pain.

Ice as often as once per hour for about 20 minutes.

Compress with wrap to decrease swelling.

Elevate above heart to increase circulation.

NSAIDS can decrease pain & swelling.

Surgery is usually necessary when a fracture (of tibia/fibula) or ligament disruption is present.

Forced dorsiflexion or eversion of the foot from activities such as:

  • Landing on a person's foot
  • Landing from a long jump
  • Playing sports like football, basketball & volleyball

Diagnostic Tests

Compression Test

  • Pain intensifies

Passive Range of Motion (PROM)

  • Pain-free except dorsiflexion
