THE IRUKANDJI JELLYFISH

By Will Imlay 8C

History

Description

  • The Irukandji was first found in 1964 by Dr Jack Barnes who found it by accident while studying box jellyfish
  • Before this time people where thought to of had a heart attack swimming and died when it was actually the jellyfish.
  • The symptoms of the venom were actually found in 1952 and called 'Irukandji Syndrome'. To make a connection between the jellyfish and the symptoms , Barnes stung himself with one. He was in huge pain and was hospitalized but he had proof that they were both connected

Fun fact #2

Barnes actually developed the first stinger wetsuit after realising that it didnt sting in synthetic fibre
