Preparation

Sugarcane was taken by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage from the Canary Islands to what is now the Dominican Republic.

There, Sugarcane plantations were formed everywhere and became a mass trading product. Today sugarcane is one of the most grown crops in the world.

Sugarcane was originally grown for the purpose of chewing in Southeastern Asia. The rinds of the stalks were removed and the tissues were chewed. The production of sugar was first discovered in India by boiling the juice.

Though Sugarcane was first used in New Guinea, its rapid spread is due to the Arabs and their conquest. Where ever they went, they took sugarcane with them.

Sugarcane was introduced to Portugal and Spain through Arabian conquest. It then spread to the Canary Islands and West Africa.
