Gatsby's act of heroism and his later life

1918-1919

  • Significance: all the hopes of Gatsby are being diminished by the marriage of Daisy. Then it becomes a mission to bring her back, which adds to the conflict of the story.

1908

Attends St Olaf's Lutheran college

  • Gatz attends St Olaf's Lutheran college in Minnesota.
  • He works as a janitor at school to pay the tuition.
  • He drops out of school after 2 weeks.

1907

Finds a way to change his life.

Jay has run away from home, he has a small boat and spends his time fishing on Lake Superior.

Significance: Shows the work that Gatsby have to put into his dream.

  • Gatsby's company advances far ahead of other companies and holds off German attacks for 2 days.Gatsby is awarded many medals, including the Montenegran Order of St Daniel.
  • He also is sent to Oxford for 5 months.
  • Gatsby is very disappointed when he receives a letter from Daisy saying that she will marry someone else.
  • He returns to America, meets Meyer Wolfsheim in New York with
  • He begins living and working bootlegging business.
  • Significance: When he starts to change his life.
  • Gatsby enjoys the happiness of his life with Daisy for only one month.
  • Then he has to go overseas to serve in the War, but he constantly trys to get back to Daisy.

Significance: How Gatsby and Daisy are being apart, hee always wants to be with the woman that he loves. But he also appears to be a patriot to nation.

1909

1906

In the age of 16, James Gatz writes a schedule, by which he intends to improve himself to be successful in his life. It sets out a detailed timetable for each day, including such activities as study electricity etc. and practice elocution, poise and how to attain it. It also lists "General Resolves", such as "no wasting time at Shafters" and read one improving book or magazine per week. In doing this Gatz is consciously modelling himself on Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States.

  • He loafs along a beach in Little Girl Bay, Lake Superior , 'searching for something to do'.
  • He returns to work as a fisherman.
  • He rows out to Cody's yacht to warn him of the dangers of the place he had stopped to anchor.
  • Dan Cody takes Gatz under his "wing" as a mentor and gives his name as James Gatsby.
  • He begins sailing and working with Dan Cody for 5 years.
  • Significance: This if the main reason that motivates Gatz to change his life. It leads to so many events in his future.

Significance: Gatsby is determined to earn his wealth and the lifestyle he wants to live. He wants to become wealthy and well established in society.

Significance: This becomes the premise and the entire conflict within the story

1892

Jay Gatsby is born.

1917

meets Daisy

Jay Gatsby is born to a poor family in North Dakota with the name of James Gatz.

He grows up and works on a farm with his family.

  • While Gatsby is training in Camp Taylor, he meets Daisy in Lousiville, Kentucky. He falls in love with Daisy Fay.
  • In the Autumn, Gatsby kisses her, and sees 'that the blocks of the sidewalks really formed a ladder and mounted to a secret place above the trees - he could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder.'

1914

  • Significance: the entire story revolves around Gatsby.

After Cody dies, Gatsby decided to join the army for the War World I.

Dan Cody dies

Cody dies, leaving Gatsby $25,000, but Ella Kaye, Cody's mistress sues and Gatsby receives nothing.

1915

Significance: This is how Gatsby starts to meet Daisy.

Significance: He becomes penniless again but educated.
