Weapon's

In the early years of the Elizabethan era, swords were the most common weapons chosen, swords and bows and arrows were mostly used in combats and leisure. For smaller combats, usually one on one which was preferred , they commonly used rapiers, spears ,and axes. swords used today are a lot heavier than they were in the Elizabethan era. The catholic spanish and french caused the threat of war to be constant in the Elizabethan era, so they needed plenty of weapons, which they had.

FENCING!!!

Fencing in the Elizabethan era was mandatory for all Upper class Nobility. There were two different types of swords used. They ranged from 30 inches to 72 inches. The nobility liked to brag about how heavy their sword was, when in reality, they were not heavy at all. When taking lessons (which you had to do) you were put into different "levels" which you would have to pass. For example, you were a page if you were between 7 and 14 years old, then go on to be a squire from 14 to 21. After completing these stages you would make a formal enrty into Knighthood at the age of 21. Before being crowned a Knight, you would have to compete almost 14 years of extra training according to the Code of Chivalry.

Card Games

Just like you and I, children needed something to do in their spare time. In Elizabethan times they did not have phones, computers, ect. to rely on when they got bored. The children in these times played many games that involved strategy, lots of movement, and pure fun.

Board Games

  • One and Thirty (ancestors to modern Blackjack)
  • Ruff and Honors (teams of 4)
  • Maw (a 16th-century trick-taking game for up to 10 players)
  • Chess
  • Alquerques (Like chess)
  • Shove Ha'penny (played with coins)
  • Shovelboard (shuffleboard)

Games In Elizabethan Times

Many card games were played just like ours today using a deck of 52 cards, and playing with a big group of people. In fact, many of the men and some women even liked to gamble just like we do! In Elizabethan times people would most enjoy board games.

Many games played in the Elizabethan times were much like ours. They were popular in all walks of society, especially the games that had an element of gambling! Games were played by upper class, lower class, adults and children. They were put into different categories;

  • Card Games
  • Board Games
  • Dice Games
  • Sporting Games
  • Children's Games
