Themes

The theme is the message the author wants to tell the reader. A example from the story is when the people passed by Andy and saw him as a Royal, not as himself. We learned that you shouldn't classify yourself, and you shouldn't judge others based on appearance and their characteristics. When Andy was dying, he thought about being a Royal, and how it killed him. Andy regretted joining the Royals.

Setting/Atmospher/P.O.V

The setting of the story took place on a sidewalk, in a alley, between 11am-12pm. In the story it states that Andy had been stabbed in a alley and left on a sidewalk to potentially die. This is a effective setting because it fits the location of where a murder would commonly happen and isn't in a random place. The point of view is in third person.

Literary Device/Relevant Terms

Flashback- used to describe and show the reader what happened at an earlier time.

This is shown in the story, when Andy looks back at why he left the house, and eventually leading to the stabbing.

"He had left the jump to get a package of cigarettes. He told her he would be back in a few minutes... He had started through the alley, and that was when he had been ambushed." (Pg.1-2)

This part of the story tells us what lead to the story; the incidents that occurred at an earlier time. Therefore, the author portrayed a flashback within the story.

Simile- use to compare two things directly using 'like' or 'as'.

This literary device is shown when the drunk man, the first character to meet Andy after he was stabbed, compares how drunk he thought Andy was, to himself, even though Andy wasn't drunk.

"You must be as drunk as I am." (Pg. 2)

This quote represents a simile being used within the story. The drunk man compared how drunk he was, with how drunk he thought Andy was, even though he wasn't drunk, therefore incorporating the literary device of a simile into the story.

Image (Imagery)/Characterization- used to give the reader a detailed picture or description of a character.

This literary device is shown in the first two paragraphs of the story. The author gives a detailed picture of what Andy looks like/what he is wearing.

"He was sixteen years old... wore a bright purple jacket... the lettering (...) of the jacket read The Royals. The boys name was Andy, and the name was delicately scripted in black thread on the front... He had been stabbed ten minutes ago (...) just below his rib cage and had been drawn across his body violently, tearing a wide gap in his flesh." Pg.1

As the author describes ho the protagonist looks, and lists his physical characteristics, the author uses imagery/characterization to make a detailed picture of Andy.

Pathetic Fallacy- the use of the setting to foreshadow the conclusion of the story.

This literary device is shown when it is raining. It foreshadows the bad things to come.

"...the rain had become so suddenly fierce." (Pg.1)

As the author describes the rainfall occurring throughout the story, he uses pathetic fallacy. Pathetic fallacy was used to portray the sadness of the conclusion/a sad ending.

Suspense- is a state of anticipation and curiosity as to the outcome of the story.

Suspense is shown twice; when the couple notices Andy bleeding, and when Andy takes off the Royals jacket.

" He knelt down beside Andy. 'You cut?' he asked... He saw the lettering on the jacket then. The Royals... 'What... Do you want to do Freddie?' 'I dont know. I dont want to get mixed up in this." (Pg. 5)

This moment demonstrates suspense. The outcome of the decision is unknown. We want to know. We are curious as to the outcome of the decision. Will Andy be saved? Or will the couple leave him to die? Therefore, the author portrayed suspense in this part of the story.

"With great effort, he rolled over onto his back... If he never did another thing, he wanted to take off the jacket. The jacket had only one meaning now, and that was a very simple meaning." (Pg. 7)

With the last of his energy, Andy takes off his jacket. He didn't wan to die, in general, and especially not a Royal. If anyone came by, he wanted to be saved. We find suspense here, in the question, "Will Andy survive?"

Short Story Elements

The climax would be when he finally realizes that he is going to die, and that nobody is going to come to his rescue. He has lost all hope, and is sad that he will be remembered as a gang member, and not as Andy, the person he really is.

Characterization

2.

Group Members

The rising action in this story is when the multiple people came to Andy to help him, but, they never did.

Realizing that he is going to die, he does not want to remembered as a gang member, but as himself, Andy. With the last ounce of his strength he takes off his Royals jacket and throws it a few meters away from him, renouncing all ties that he had with the Royals.

The protagonist of this story is Andy, who was a member of a gang called the Royals. Throughout the story, Andy is doubting the fact that he is slowly bleeding to death, only thinking of trivial things for the majority of the plot. Eventually, he comes to terms with the fact that he is indeed dying, as well as realizing that he is his own person in the end; most of the people that encountered him chose to ignore him, due to his association with the Royals.

Also, the antagonist of this story is quite unclear; you could assume the people that came across him could be antagonists, since they all chose not to assist him during the verge of death.

Lastly, there were two types of conflicts involved in this story: Person vs. Self and Person vs. Society. The first conflict was revolved around Andy, as he tried to come to terms with who he truly was throughout the story. The latter would involve the people that encountered him, as they all chose not to help him and gave off a negative reaction when they had approached Andy.
