Mac Bethad mac Findláich

  • Banquo (never existing) is believed to have been made up to be like this by Shakespeare to please King James I.
  • Instead of Banquo being described as an accomplise to the murder of King Duncan (like referred to in the Holinshed's Chronicles), his character is drastically changed for the play.
  • Banquo (in the play) is also shown a vision of 7 generations of descendants, while King James was known to be the 8th.

Real vs Shakespeare

  • The witches added to the story of Macbeth are again a 'pleaser' for King James I who wrote a book on detection and practices of witchcraft. This could of been used to show support for King James's beliefs and to gain his attention.

Alterations Made to The Story

  • One of the biggest reasons Shakespeare greatly altered the story of Macbeth was because of King James I. King James at that time was the reigning king and was believed to be descended from Banquo (being a Stuart).
  • In the play Banquo is told numerous times his descendants will be king, and even though he dies defending his son from Macbeth, his son does escape.
  • Banquo is always the one being described as having a good nature and being morally 'right'.

(Continued)

  • Banquo is supposed to be the ancestor of the Stuarts. He is a general in the army, described as being brave.
  • The witches tell him he is never to be king but that his descendants will be kings.
  • Banquo in real life, never existed.

Differences in Character

  • In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Duncan is portrayed as a gentle, wise, aging ruler.
  • The real Duncan was a young, weak king who had 'youthful arrogance'.
  • The three witches from the play were also based from Holinshed Chronicles, and were not real or based off of real people.
  • The real Macbeth was not a ruthless, murderous character. In the play, Macbeth is known as the antihero, and he follows an 'evil path'. His actual rule is remembered as being peaceful and prosperous.
  • Macduff was also a fictional character added to the story by Shakespeare.

Differences in Plot

  • In Shakespeare's tale, Gruoch convinces Macbeth to stab and kill Duncan in his sleep. The blame was placed on another.
  • History states that on August 1040, Macbeth killed Duncan I (his cousin) in battle near Elgin.

MacBeth

  • Historically, Malcolm III kills Macbeth and Lulach (MacBeth's stepson) becomes king. However, Lulach only lasts 8 months and is then killed by Malcolm III at Essie, Strathbogie.
  • In the story Malcolm is present, but that's all that's being said for now :D.
  • Known in England as Macbeth, this 11nth century Scottish king's real name was Mac Bethad mac Findláich.
  • Macbeth ruled for 17 years as a brave leader and equable ruler.
  • His marriage to Gruoch (Kenneth III's granddaughter) strengthened his claim to the throne.

Mac Bethad mac Findláich

Although Shakespeare's play still represents aspects of the events and people involved in Macbeth's real story, his play is loosely based on Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland. (First published in 1577)
