RUE

Effect on Others

"Rue at my side, her head cradled on my shoulder, have given me a sense of security"(page 207 of The Hunger Games)

This shows that Rue being there makes Katniss feel calmer. It also shows that since Katniss has had no partner in the games before now, she feels secure, like she has someone to watch her back.

"He lowers the rock and points at me, almost accusingly. 'Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl' " (page 284 of The Hunger Games)

Thresh let Katniss go because she was Rue's ally and cared for her. This shows that Tresh cared for Rue too. I wonder if they new each other before the games, or met when they were reaped,

Thoughts/Feelings

Speech

“ 'You can share my sleeping bag if you want. We’ll both easily fit.' Her face lights up" (page 204 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that Rue has been cold at night and is feeling very excited to be able to use the sleeping bag. It also shows that she did not expect Katniss to be that generous.

“ 'Breakfast,' says Rue. She holds them out revealing two big eggs" (page 208 of The Hunger Games.)

Rue probably feels pleased with herself for getting a good breakfast for herself and Katniss. Also, she is probably feeling pretty hungry.

Actions

“ 'I’m very hard to catch,' she says in a tremulous voice. 'And if they can’t catch me, they can’t kill me...' " (page 126 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that Rue is very confidant in her abilities to evade capture. She doesn't give much detail on how she can avoid being caught though. I wonder if she does this to be mysterious.

"Oh,' says Rue with a sigh. 'I’ve never had a whole leg to myself before'" (page 201 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that Rue never has had much to eat in her life, which means she is most likely poor. It also seems like she wants to be polite and not eat very much.

"There is a rustling in a nearby tree. Then the same noise again a bit farther off. I realize [Rue] is leaping from tree to tree"(page 189 of The Hunger Games.)

Since Rue is leaping from tree to tree, it shows that she is agile and light. This also shows that she has spent a lot of time in the trees developing this skill.

"...as soon as the anthem finishes [Rue] snuggles up against me and falls asleep"(page 208 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that Rue has decided to fully trust Katniss. It also shows that she sees Katniss as an ally and as a friend.

Appearance

"She has bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin and stands tiled up on her toes with her arms slightly extended to her sides, as if ready to take wing at the slightest sound" (page 98-99 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that Rue seems like a bird. Maybe she was written to look this way because most birds are small and fragile and the author wanted her to appear small and innocent. Another person in Katniss life that is small and innocent is Prim, and maybe Rue reminds Katniss of Prim.

"...[her] eyes appear, wide and alert..."(page 189 of The Hunger Games.)

This shows that even though it is night time, Rue is wide awake. This could be because there are other tributes nearby, or that she is simply to scared to feel sleepy.
