Dormaalocyon Latouri

  • The carnivore ancestor Dormaalocyon latouri, roamed Europe 56 million years ago.

Earliest Ancestor

  • It was a 2-pound (1 kilogram) tree-dweller that fed on mainly smaller mammals and insects
  • A common ancestor of the tiger, the lion,

and the bear

  • The ankle bone fossils show that Dormaalocyon lived scampering through the trees in what was then a very humid subtropical forest enviornment

Evolution Understanding

“The understanding of the origination of the carnivoraforms is important for reconstructing the adaptation of placental mammals to carnivorous diet. Therefore, Dormaalocyon latouri provides information concerning the evolution of placental mammals after the disappearance of the largest dinosaurs at the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.”

-Dr Solé

The Dormaalocyon Latouri

  • Fossils show it had over 250 teeth and bones located in the ankle
  • Dormaalocyon looked like something of a cross between a tiny panther and a squirrel, with a long tail and a catlike snout

Ankle bones and teeth, including baby teeth, from Dormaalocyon

Tiger Adaptations

Environmental Conditions that led to evolution

  • The tiger's sense of hearing is so sharp that they are capable of hearing sound waves below the range of normally audible sound
  • Temperature got very humid and dry for the mammal

•Their striped coat helps them blend in with sunlight filtering in the jungle

  • Their seamless camouflage to their surroundings is enhanced because the striping also helps break up their body shape, making them difficult to detect for unsuspecting prey

Timeline

  • Deforestation occurred
  • scratches at trees to sharpen claws, and it serves as a territorial mark

Descendence

  • All modern carnivores descend from a single group, found in the Paleocene and Eocene periods The Paleocene ran from 66-56 million years ago, and the Eocene ran from 56-33.9 million years ago.

Some evolved from Miacids, then evolve into either vivverravidar which lead to Proilurus, or Proilurus (cat/weasel) which led to Pseudaelurus. Schizailurus then leads to Feliz Longensis which then led to the evolution of the modern tiger.

  • Since Dormaalocyon latouri was arboreal (living in trees) , and that carnivoraforms made their way to North America around this time, shows that the existence of a continuous evergreen forest belt at high latitudes during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum,”

Modern Relatives of the Tiger

  • There are six surviving subspecies of tiger: Amur tiger, Bengal tiger, Indochinese tiger, Malayan tiger, South China tiger and Sumatran tiger.
