Theodor Geiger

Intelligentsia

  • Considered the founder of the concept of Intelligentsia
  • Those who create the objects of representative culture
  • Conducted a study on the origins of Danish intelligentsia

Methodology

  • Geiger contributed greatly to methodology of the social sciences
  • He did not see a difference in the social sciences and the natural sciences
  • He stated that social sciences can only be considered a scientific discipline if it studied patterns
  • Importance of empirical Data and theory
  • Observation can only support a concept
  • In 1949 Geiger conducted a census on social stratification
  • The census include 40 000 men
  • Subjects would be asked their occupation and the occupation of their father and father in law

Life

  • Born on November 9th 1891 in Munich Germany
  • Studied law and political science in university and received a doctorate in law
  • Served in the military for 4 years
  • In 1918 was employed by statistical offices in Germany
  • Led a workers school in Berlin from 1924-1928
  • Flew to Denmark in 1933
  • First sociology professor in Denmark
  • In 1948 he published Nordic studies on sociology and became the co founder of the international sociological association.
  • Died on June 16th 1952

Social Stratification

  • The result of the study was a decrease in social mobility overtime
  • Geiger believed that this was due to democratization which led to a decrease in desire for upward mobility
  • The view that society is divided into social levels and groups
