Unexpected Actions

Is this a hint of change?

I chose an empty cardboard box for my second picture beacause as stated in the end of December's chapter, Doug takes his supplies for number 166 home! This is a very unexpected action to see from him. "Doug went on in, and he came back carrying the cardboard box for 166 from the coat room. He looked at us, shrugged, and hauled it away down the hall, staggering under its clumsy weight. We never saw it again." (Schmidt, 320) Normally, people would probably expect him too keep the box until the end of the year, and then finally use it in some horrible way. This hints that he is changing his ways, to become just a good friend.

Troublemaker

Doug causes a lot of trouble when it comes to Camillo Junior High.

For my first picture, I chose a water fountain, one of the things Doug used to plot against the teachers. He labeled his ridiculous schemes with numbers soaring up to and above 400! While he is hiding his things in the coat room of moldy lunches, Nobody knows what Doug is going to do next. This is presented to us in chapter 1, September; when he covers a teacher in staining fruit juice by setting up a trap at a water fountain. In this chapter, he does not seem to show much individuality- he just follows the crowd to be a nasty, troublesome, teacher's worry. Once he even got suspended for two whole weeks due to his sneaky ideas!

Bert the Turtle

"Bert the Turtle" Was a popular cartoon video featuring a safety turtle named Bert created to comfort people if there ever happened to be an atomic bomb attack. I can relate this to the atomic bomb drills at Camillo Junior High.

Vietnam war atom bomb awareness month

The class, along with Doug has to take part in atom bomb awareness month, and curl under their desks for eighteen minutes to be 'safe' from the bomb. This causes many complaints from the class, being stuck under a desk for quite a while. Doug and his friends may have seen Bert the turtle before on television.

Standing up for friends

Yellow Painted Tights in the News

For a third picture, I chose a newspaper because in January's chapter, Doug goes all out to help his friend, Holling, and comes to school with a black eye from his brother, who plotted a nasty scheme against Holling's yellow tights featured at the Shakespeare play and in the news. "Then he came back home, carried them up to his lair, and cut out the Ariel the Fairy picture from each one, careful to include the headline, which was this: Holling Hoodhood as Ariel the Fairy Soars Onstage to Rescue His Potent Master." (Schmidt, 327) Doug trying to help out Holling by attempting to stop his brother from cutting the pictures shows his caring side to prevent embarrassment for him. Doug tried to stop his brother, for the sake of his friend, but failed. He is clearly starting to show kindness to others. It was very considerate of him to stand up to his brother, who is much older than him and perhaps feared by many, and help out a friend; or at least try his hardest to.

Becoming an Individual

Doug Swieteck

I chose a stand up for yourself poster as a fourth picture because both taking home #166 from the coat room and trying to save his friend from major embarrassment caused by his brother has shown that Doug has learned to stand up for himself and his friends and do whats right to give up his old ways as a nasty troublemaker. He has learned to care for othersand be respectful. This shows how Doug's individuality changes throughout the story, and how he chooses to be a person whose more considerate for others.
