Imagery- Imagery is used in the chapter to show or help the reader envision what the citizens of Fort Repose go through during their experiences after the bombing occurred. Imagery was also used to show the effect of the bombs aftermath on the town itself.
The chapter is significant to the plot of the novel because in this chapter the bombs go off , making the people survive in the aftermath of the nuclear explosion. The bombs explosion is the climax of the story because it has made them realize that Fort Repose could be the town that gets bombed next . The bombing produces many problems that the characters have to face.
Pg 121 "Keep it ! I don't want money. What the hell is money good for? You can't drive it and you can't eat it.
To me this is the most memorable quote because it states that money is now worthless and you don't need it to survive. The only things you need to survive is food and transportation and those probably wont be to easy to find.
After the bomb explosions everything changed, everyone had to provide for themselves. The theme of the chapter is " survival of the fittest" and the people of Fort Repose along with the other towns were put to the test. The ones that died suddenly did not pass the test and survive in the aftermath of a nuclear attack.
The main setting of the chapter 5 is set in a small town in Florida named Fort Repose. The setting is relevant to the actions taking place because being a small town, there weren't many emergency services to aid someone who needs special assistance. If all the emergency services were occupied at the moment, no one could help you, causing you to only rely on yourself to get the job done.
The Motif in the story is the nuclear explosion itself. The bomb is the Motif because when it blows up it makes people gather their materials and focus on what they have to do in order to survive. This builds the theme because it makes people realize that things are about to change and be different. People now have to understand that it is the survival of the fittest.
The Bragg house is located on River Road. In the Bragg house everyone was awakened up by the rumble of the house when a nuclear bomb went off. Randy, intrigued by the rumble, stepped outside to observe. As Randy was observing, Peyton and Ben joined to witness what was happening. When the whole residency of the Bragg house was outside observing, another bomb went off; the mushroom was glowing and the ground was shaking. Peyton unaware of the brightness of the flash, stared at the glow too hard and damaged her eyesight. Helen tries to help Peyton while Randy tries to contact Doctor Dan for help.
Riverside Inn is a hotel where Dan was assisting the people that needed medical assistance. When Randy walked in the hotel immediately there was chaos, people were swarming around the front office demanding answers and going out of their mind. Randy set out to find Dan; on his way he ran into a women leaning against the wall full of writhe about to deliver her baby. Randy finally located Dan. He was with a dead man in room 244; the man had died of a heart attack. Randy was able to convince Dan to go help Peyton recover from her damaged eyesight.
After the bombs went off and all communication towers were down, the people were short of supplies, causing them to head toward the bank. People were banging and slamming to get in so they could get what they needed. Some people wanted to get money so they can get supplies and the others wanted to send messages to their family members that lived somewhere else. "Fort Repose's financial structure crumbled in a day." Money then became a worthless piece of paper.

The main conflict was the bomb exploding in the beginning of the chapter. The bomb's explosion had an impact on Fort Repose and the neighbor areas. It damaged and contaminated the zone making it harder to survive.
Due to Peyton losing her eyesight, Randy is forced to go and find doctor Dan Gunn. Randy tried calling Dan but none of his calls were going through, so Randy went out to look for him. After locating Dan and receiving information on what to do about Peyton, he traveled back home. On Randy's trip back he noticed many convicts that managed to escape their convict camp during the bombs explosions. Many of these convicts were armed with heavy artillery that they stole from the guards and were heading towards Fort Repose.
In the beginning of chapter 5 everyone in the house is awoken by nuclear bombs that go off near Fort Repose. The entire household went outside to get a first hand look at the explosion and to see the destruction made and then the second bomb goes off. Once the second bomb goes off, it's luminosity is extreme; Peyton stared intensively at the glowing light and damaged her eyesight. She only see's the bright flash of the bomb even when her eyes were shut. Due to her losing her eyesight, everyone must contribute to help her recover.
After the explosions there has been no authority in the town, everyone was doing whatever they needed to do in order to survive. Once the convicts were migrating around there was no one to stop them and put them in hand cuffs. At the Riverside Inn people were going insane and began to lose it. When a General tried to show his authority and control everyone, no one bothered to pay attention. At the grocery stores there were people cramming in lines and everyone taking anything they wanted or needed. Pg-113 "( you have to assume some sort of leadership or there will be panic.)"

Alas Babylon is a novel written about a family and a group of friends who survive in a world after nuclear warfare. In chapter 5 two bombs explode near Fort Repose which is the start of the war. Peyton was gazing too hard at the explosion and it damaged her eyesight. Randy looks for Doctor Dan, who is at Riverside Inn helping patients. When Randy and Dan leave to go back home, they find several convicts on the road trying to salvage needed materials and find shelter. Meanwhile Florence and Alice set off to work; Florence works at the bank and Alice works at the library. Florence helps by receiving and giving messages from other towns near by, while Alice provides the Civil Defense pamphlets. Edgar, the president of the bank, was upset and confused because the bank was no longer needed and money was worthless; he ends up killing himself.
