How are Gender Roles Learned?
Although gender roles are usually emphasized via words, young children learn gender roles by being shown how they work and are applied.
Emphasis of Gender Roles
Enforcement of gender roles is highly dependent on one's culture. Some cultures treat gender roles much more seriously and importantly than others!
Gender Role
A gender role is a set of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex
Family Structure
- Gender Roles are much more easily enforced and young children pick up on them much faster if they have the influence of someone they can look up to of the same gender.
- If this isn't the case, it could lead to the child feeling confusion and stress on how he/she should be acting.
- Research shows that children who have equal exposure to both genders feel the least stress about gender roles.
Typical Gender Roles
Male: Provide for family, better at science/math, can't show emotion, refrain from doing household work, don't share feelings.
Female: Run the household, do household work, better at language, more emotional, should be more open with their feelings

- For those who don't fit in to their gender role, may cause extreme confusion and stress
- Those who don't conform to the gender role are usually outcast by society
- Provides an issue with gender equality
