Pituitary Dwarfism Syndrome

In the 1800s, one of the most famous circus performers, Charles Sherwood Stratton, suffered with this syndrome.

Genetic counseling is a process in which parents are warned that their child will have a future disorder. It is an option to help people because it not only warns parents about their child but also helps parents prepare to get help for their child.

Pituitary Dwarfism is a syndrome in which a humans growth is slow and delayed. Problems are caused in the pituitary gland which is a small part of the brain and the body does not produce enough growth hormone.

The deficiency is present at birth but not diagnosed until later. Growth charts help show that the child is affected with this syndrome. X Rays are also used to compare the fist of a child with the syndrome and a child without.

The symptoms of this syndrome causes the person to grow only less than 2 inches per year and the slow growth only appears at 2 or 3 years of age. Body proportions and intelligence is just the same as a normal person but their body build is different. Max height is around 4 feet 11 inches

Fat distribution is a lot higher in dwarfs and it is more around the waist. Protein synthesis is diminished and their strength is diminished as well. Seizures can occur and their skin is cyanotic which is blue or purple coloration of the skin.

Depression is normal to them and childish behavior as well. Puberty is slower than usual but once they pass puberty they remain dwarfs. Vomiting, headaches, and vision problems are also symptoms.

Pituitary Dwarfism Syndrome is genetic and it is a dominant trait.

A treatment they use is growth hormone therapy. Dwarfs receive injections once a day or several times a week. Side affects are fluid retention and muscle and joint aches. The disability can be made less severe with physical therapy, braces, or surgical procedures.

This disorder occurs in about one in almost 10,000 births and it can happen to anyone but of course it is a genetic trait.
